what can be done as a first step to be into export import business. i am in australia at the moment and obviously every business needs some guidelines and ethics to follow. if someone is already in export - import business can u provide me with some precious advice to get it started.

Is this an easy business to start? Is there lots of money to made here in this business?
In my opinion, money depends more on the product rather than import/export. If you have knowledge about the target market, then everything else falls in place. The main differences between import/export and local businesses are: Currency/Payment methods (foreign exchange), Logistics (distances), Communication and Agencies involved (Govt. as well as private). Therefore, uncertainty and risks associated with import/export business are more, making it slightly difficult when compared with local business. Therefore, it is not easy to start without some experience of basic import and export operations.

I would like to recommend two. One is the Center for International Trade Development. This is a state funded agency in California. It has 22 offices in California and offers classes on import and export. Their website is www.citd.com. The other one is for export only: the U.S. Department of Commerce. Their export division has a lot of offices in California. It offers classes on export depending on the industry. They also have a list of different trade ociations. Their website is www.commerce.gov
